How to Move Forward When You Feel Like Time Has Been Lost
There are moments in life that stop us in our tracks.
Perhaps you’ve received unexpected news about your health, a loved one, a relationship or a family situation. Maybe you’ve experienced a business setback, a missed opportunity or a life transition that leaves you wondering how things could have been different.
Often, alongside the sadness and disappointment comes another emotion:
A feeling that time has been lost.
You begin replaying conversations, decisions and circumstances in your mind. You wonder what might have happened if you had known then what you know now. You imagine how different things could be if only you had acted sooner.
It’s a deeply human experience.
The fact that you feel sadness is often evidence that you cared. You cared about the relationship. You cared about the outcome. You cared about the person, the dream or the possibility that existed.
There is nothing wrong with feeling those emotions.
The challenge comes when we stay there.
The Past Cannot Be Changed, But It Can Teach Us
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned through coaching thousands of people over the years is that while the past can be a valuable teacher, it is a terrible place to live.
We can acknowledge what has happened.
We can be disappointed.
We can even grieve what might have been.
But no amount of dwelling on the past changes it.
What it does change is our ability to create something different moving forward.
When we continually focus on what should have happened, we unintentionally direct our energy away from what can happen next.
The question is not:
“What would I do differently if I could go back?”
The question is:
“What will I do now with the awareness I have today?”
You Did the Best You Could With the Awareness You Had
This is one of the most freeing ideas I know.
Many people judge past versions of themselves using their current level of awareness.
Of course you would make different decisions today.
You’ve grown.
You’ve learned.
You’ve gained new experiences and perspectives.
But the person you were then did not have the awareness you have now.
At the time, you were making the best decisions you could with the information, beliefs, understanding and emotional capacity available to you.
When we truly accept this, something powerful happens.
We stop fighting the past.
And when we stop fighting the past, we free ourselves to create the future.
The Present Moment Is Where Transformation Occurs
Many people spend so much time worrying about the future that they miss the only place where change is actually possible.
The present moment.
We don’t create our future six months from now.
We create it today.
The future relationship begins with today’s conversation.
The future business result begins with today’s decision.
The future level of health begins with today’s actions.
The future version of you is created by the thoughts, feelings and behaviours you choose in this moment.
This is why gratitude and faith are so powerful.
They anchor us in the assumption that what we desire is already unfolding, even if we cannot yet see the evidence.
A New Future Requires a New Version of You
Sometimes the situation itself isn’t the thing that needs to change first.
Sometimes we do.
Whether it’s a family dynamic, a co-parenting relationship, a team culture or a business challenge, every environment contains a paradigm—a pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that has been repeated over time.
If you want a different result, you must bring something different to the situation.
A new thought.
A new attitude.
A new level of awareness.
A new way of responding.
Transformation rarely happens overnight, but when one person changes, the entire dynamic begins to shift.
Focus Forward
If you’re moving through a season of disappointment right now, I encourage you to be gentle with yourself.
Acknowledge your feelings.
Learn from the experience.
Harvest the wisdom.
Then bring your attention back to the only place where your power exists—the present moment.
The future is not created by dwelling on what has been lost.
It is created by what you choose to think, feel and do next.
And that choice is always available to you.
