The lessons I learnt studying with Bob Proctor, and why the greatest transformation often begins long before the results become visible.
You can spend years building a successful business, achieving financial goals and creating a life that looks wonderful from the outside, yet still find yourself searching for something you can’t quite put your finger on.
Perhaps it’s greater fulfilment, a stronger sense of purpose or simply the confidence that you can continue creating extraordinary results without sacrificing the other areas of your life that matter most.
For me, that search eventually led to Bob Proctor, and what began as a simple decision to listen to an abundance meditation would fundamentally change the way I understood myself, my potential and what was possible for my future.
Recently, I revisited a conversation I had with Doug Dane and Cory Proctor, where we reflected on my early experiences studying with Bob, the changes that followed and what it really means to become a serious student of personal growth.
Watching that conversation again reminded me of something I believe is particularly important for anyone who has already achieved a considerable level of success.
The greatest transformation isn’t always about achieving more. Sometimes it’s about finally understanding how you created your results in the first place, so you can deliberately create what you want next.
The Moment I Realised There Was Something I Didn’t Yet Understand
When I first came across Bob Proctor, I was at a point in my life where I was searching for answers. I’d read books, explored different philosophies and spent considerable time trying to understand why some people seemed able to create the lives they genuinely wanted, while others continued to struggle despite their best intentions and considerable effort.
Then, almost by chance, I discovered one of Bob’s abundance meditations.
I’d never heard of him before, but he suggested listening to the recording for 30 days, and I decided to follow his instructions.
On day 14, I remember sitting bolt upright in bed with the overwhelming realisation that this man understood something I had never heard anyone explain before.
I immediately got up, went to my computer and began researching how I could study with him.
What struck me wasn’t simply the possibility of earning more money or achieving another goal. It was the sense that I’d finally found an explanation for something I’d been trying to understand for years.
During my conversation with Doug and Cory, I described it as finding the lid of a puzzle box.
I’d spent years collecting pieces of information, but for the first time I could see how they fitted together and began to understand how my thinking, beliefs and self-image were influencing the results I experienced.
That understanding gave me something I hadn’t anticipated.
A genuine sense of peace.
I no longer felt as though I was endlessly searching for the next answer, because I had begun to understand that I could learn how to deliberately create the results I wanted.
The Most Significant Changes Happened Before Anyone Else Could See Them
It’s easy to look at someone’s achievements and assume that the transformation began when their circumstances changed.
We see the successful business, the financial results, the extraordinary experience or the lifestyle they’ve created, but we rarely see the internal changes that made those outcomes possible.
For me, the first significant shift wasn’t financial. It was the confidence that came from understanding I wasn’t limited to repeating the circumstances I’d already experienced.
As I continued studying with Bob and applying what I was learning, I began to approach decisions differently, set goals that genuinely stretched my thinking and develop a greater sense of certainty about the direction I wanted my life to take.
And importantly, I wasn’t interested in applying these ideas to business alone.
I wanted to understand what was possible in my relationships, my family life, my health, my financial circumstances and the experiences I could create.
That desire to put the material to the test eventually led me to one of the most extraordinary physical challenges of my life.
From Never Being a Runner to Winning 150 Kilometres Across the Simpson Desert
During our conversation, Doug asked about the ultramarathon I’d completed across Australia’s Simpson Desert.
What makes that experience particularly interesting is that I had only started running six months before the event.
I went on to run and win a 150-kilometre ultramarathon across the centre of Australia, something I would never previously have imagined attempting.
I didn’t decide to do it because I had years of running experience or because I already knew I was capable of completing such an event.
I wanted to see what would happen if I applied the principles I was studying to something that took me well beyond my existing experience and perceived limitations.
Throughout the race, I had Bob’s teachings playing in my ears, reminding me that while the body may become physically tired, the mind doesn’t have to accept the limitations we so often impose upon ourselves.
Of course, there was physical preparation, discipline and considerable effort involved, but the experience reinforced a lesson that has remained with me ever since.
We often make decisions about what’s possible based on what we’ve already done, rather than what we could become capable of doing.
And this doesn’t only apply to running across a desert.
It applies to the business owner who has reached a certain level of success and can’t imagine growing beyond it, the leader who has become so accustomed to their responsibilities that they no longer consider what they genuinely want, or the person who quietly dismisses a dream because it feels too far removed from their current circumstances.
The question worth considering isn’t whether you’ve done something before, but whether you’re willing to become the person capable of achieving it.
Creating Success That Extends Beyond Your Business
One of the most meaningful moments in my conversation with Doug and Cory came when Cory asked about the changes that had made the greatest difference in my life.
At the time, my eldest son, Louis, was just 18 months old, and I was expecting my second child.
Naturally, we spoke about family, relationships and the extraordinary opportunity to raise children with an understanding of their own potential from such a young age.
But what I remember most clearly is how deeply I valued being able to apply what I was learning to every area of my life.
I was creating financial success, challenging myself physically, building meaningful relationships and developing a greater sense of peace and confidence in the life I was creating.
For me, that was the real value of the material.
Because if you’re building a successful business but constantly feeling overwhelmed, disconnected from your family or unable to enjoy the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to create, it’s worth asking whether your definition of success is serving you.
The opportunity isn’t simply to achieve more in one area while compromising another. It’s to become more deliberate about the life you’re creating as a whole.
And as Cory reflected during our conversation, when you begin to grow into more of who you’re capable of becoming, the people around you can benefit from that growth too.
Why the People You Surround Yourself With Make Such a Difference
Another important part of our conversation centred on the community I discovered through studying with Bob and attending events with the Proctor Gallagher Institute.
One of the things that struck me immediately was how different those environments felt from many of the professional settings I’d experienced previously.
I was surrounded by people who were ambitious, creative and committed to achieving better results, yet there was a genuine willingness to share ideas, offer introductions, support one another and celebrate each other’s success.
There wasn’t the same sense of competition or scarcity.
Instead, people understood that someone else’s success didn’t diminish what was available to them.
I remember describing it as feeling like I’d found home, because there was something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by people who were not only thinking differently but actively applying those ideas to their lives.
And that is something I continue to value today.
The people you spend time with influence the conversations you have, the opportunities you’re exposed to and the standards you begin to establish for yourself.
When you’re regularly surrounded by people who are pursuing goals beyond their present results, it becomes much easier to question the limitations you’ve unconsciously accepted in your own life.
Sometimes one conversation, one introduction or one new perspective can influence a decision that changes the direction of your future.
What Are You Ready to Create Next?
Looking back on this conversation, I’m reminded that the most significant change in my life didn’t begin with a major achievement or some extraordinary external event.
It began with a decision to take my own growth seriously, study something I didn’t yet understand and apply what I was learning to the circumstances of my everyday life.
The achievements followed, but the real transformation was in how I thought about myself and what I believed I could create.
And that’s the invitation I’d like to leave you with.
Regardless of what you’ve already achieved, there may be an area of your life where you’re still allowing your past experience, present circumstances or other people’s expectations to determine what you believe is possible.
Perhaps it’s a business goal you’ve been postponing, a lifestyle change you keep putting off or something you’ve wanted to experience for years but haven’t yet given yourself permission to pursue.
If you knew you could learn how to create the result you wanted, what would you choose?
You don’t need to have every answer before you begin, but you do need to be willing to think beyond what you’ve already experienced.
Because the next chapter of your life doesn’t have to look like the last one.
And the results you’ve created so far don’t have to be the limit of what’s possible next.
